收到Likely Letter到底是錄取了沒？多數留學代辦不知道的事

申請過美國大學的都知道，三月是個令人既期待又害怕受傷害的月份。儘管有些學校從12月開始一路放榜到4月，想要挑戰美國名校學生幾乎都是在等三月最大宗的開獎。舉例而言，UC 加州大學各分校從3/1開始陸續公布到3/31，UW 華盛頓大學公佈申請結果的日期是3/1至3/15，UIUC 伊利諾伊香檳大學則鎖定3/1準點發布，Stanford 史丹佛喜歡最後一個公佈，常常在4/1愚人節嚇大家。至於常春藤盟校，八校總是統一同一天同一時間全球放榜，而今年維持和去年同天，約定在3/28。   申請結果通常分為三種：錄取 (acceptance)、拒絕 (denial)、備取 (waitlist)。一般會申請常春藤的學生都不會只申請一所，12月份寄出申請資料後，結果要等三個月才知曉實在是煎熬，有的學校因而衍生出了「Likely Letter」（可能錄取通知信）。   舉例而言，我們的學生在三月初收到了全美國排名第3名的常春藤頂尖名校Columbia University 哥倫比亞大學寄來的信件，開頭如下： "I am delighted to inform you that your application to Columbia University has been carefully evaluated and that you have earned designation as a likely candidate for admission to Columbia College." 學生看到這句話，總是問：「這是什麼意思？」「到底 "likely" 是指錄取了沒有？」   事實上，收到這種 Likely Letter 就是錄取了！非但表示學生錄取了，還意味著學生是所有申請者中佼佼出眾的少數人之一！ ↑ A. LEAGUE 學生收到 Columbia University 哥大通知信   為什麼大學要寄 Likely Letters? 全美國統一交付大學訂金的期限是5月1日，從三月放榜到五月付訂前，大學無從得知哪一些學生真的會來註冊，哪一些只是申請來當備案，因此，大學希望他們精心挑選出的學生也能如此喜歡他們，進到他們學校就讀。故大學提早發出這封通知信，增加學生對學校的喜愛，也多給學生將近一個月的時間去更深入認識學校，能更從容地在眾校之間做出選擇。   收到 Likely Letters 後要做什麼? 學生首先可以寫信給大學致謝，無論最後要不要去讀，收到頂尖名校的確認信總是令人興奮，除了謝謝自己一路以來的努力付出，謝謝父母從小到大的栽培之外，也謝謝大學入學招生委員花時間審核你的資料，謝謝他們對你的認可，謝謝他們特地為你提早帶來這麼棒的好消息，以展現你對大學的尊重與喜愛。 接下來，千萬不能鬆懈，一定要持續顧好在校成績，順利高分畢業，並注重個人品格，行為舉止須檢點，留意網路發言的正當性。別忘了，就算是收到正式的錄取通知後，一旦成績一落千丈或是發生任何有違道德規範的行為，均有可能隨時被撤銷錄取資格。   高中升學＆申請大學輔導歡迎洽詢 A. 到美國讀大學最重要的步驟不在於申請過程，而是...

申請美國大學猶如長期抗戰，從國中開始加強英文能力，注重校內表現及課外活動，參與各種標準考試，到12年級時每一份申請文件的填寫、每一篇作文的撰寫、每一份作品集或研究報告的努力，對大學而言，或許只是十萬份報名資料裡的一小角，對學生而言，卻是這個人生階段，最重要的心血。   然而，申請大學的步驟並不止於大學公布結果的那一霎那，而是在數封錄取信之間，做出明智的抉擇。 今年3月錄取通知紛紛出爐後，我們在4月花了整整一個月的時間，跟學生們溝通學校的選擇，其中有幾位學生非常掙扎...   Ａ同學：在 UCSB 和 UW 之間選擇 學生及家長透過在網路上的了解，綜合比較後認為 UW 是較佳的選擇，但是我們根據過去十年的經驗，分析科系選項、學術發展、教學資源、未來潛力，強烈推薦學生去 UCSB，最後學生聽從了我們的建議，家長雖然存有疑慮，卻也尊重了孩子的決定。 後續：2019全美大學排名甫出爐，UCSB 較去年上升7個名次，UW 則倒退3個名次，UCSB 遙遙領先 UW 29個名次，此時家長心中的遲疑終於解開了，也證實我們的評估是正確的。   Ｂ同學：在台灣大學和 Stony Brook 之間選擇 學生想在氣候宜人的環境求學，因為沒錄取心中第一志願的夢想大學，對 SUNY 系統又不熟悉，本想乾脆留在台灣，經過我們努力說服，決定給自己一次踏出舒適圈的機會，家長也相當支持。 後續：學生一飛到紐約就傳來感謝的訊息，不但喜歡當地環境，也很快融入校園生活，更值得一提的是，2019年最新排名，Stony Brook 比去年上升了17個名次。   Ｃ同學：在 Toronto, UBC 和 UCI 之間選擇 學生在加拿大溫哥華讀高中，原本想繼續留在西岸，待在華人多的地方，又不知該選擇加拿大還是美國，經過我們分析之後，他屏棄舒適方面的考量，選了我們推薦的 U Toronto。 後續：才剛開學第一週，學生便意識到多倫多大學強大的競爭力與豐富的資源，目前正以前所未有的努力在讀書，和錄取其他大學的高中同學相比，他認為我們的推薦是正確的。     A. 是的，美國大學招生委員會看學生的社群網站

加拿大作家克里夫湯普森曾說明，看陌生人的 Twitter 或 Facebook 一天，會感覺像一個讀一則簡短的故事，如果看一個月，那就像是在看一本小說了。透過社群網站認識一個陌生人並不難，不但可以從這個人的用字遣詞推測出他的個性，也可以從圖片上了解他的生活模式，或是從分享的連結去理解他平時關心的議題。而在申請大學這件事上，每年都有消息指出美國大學招生委員會瀏覽學生的社群網站。   今年四月 Kaplan 公布最新針對美國大學招生委員的訪問結果，有68%的委員認為觀看學生的社群媒體對審核申請的過程是公平的，這些委員的想法包括：「公司都會看應徵者的帳號，大學當然也可以看申請者的。」「這些是公開的資料，並非侵害隱私取得，既然是在網上搜尋得到的，那就是公平的。」當然也有些委員持反對意見，認為應該就學生提供的申請文件進行審核評估，而事實上，已經有許多大學在申請表單中加入一格填網址的欄位，讓學生選擇性地提供個人網頁資訊。儘管因為學生和年輕人從原本的主流 Facebook 轉向 Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat 等其他平台，導致近年真正有去瀏覽學生帳號的委員比例有下降的趨勢，例如從去年的40%掉到今年29%的，但這些有瀏覽的委員表示他們所看到的內容確實會影響他們審核的過程。   去年 Inside Higher Ed 的調查則公布，13%的私立大學及2%的公立大學有委員定期瀏覽申請者的社群媒體帳號，雖然無論公私立都只有14-15%的委員認為瀏覽是合理的，但有54%的私立大學委員及27%的公立大學委員都同意如果在社群網站上發現申請者的偏執行為或思想，應該要將其納入審核考量。     從這二份調查看來，社群網站影響力似乎不大，不過以下二個例子絕對是最好的借鏡。   2017年4月，Harvard College 哈佛學院（哈佛大學）撤銷了至少十名學生的錄取決定，因為這些學生在 Facebook 上組成一個名為「Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens」的社團，並在網路上貼出具有攻擊性的圖片，包括嘲笑性侵害、大屠殺、兒童死亡事件，或是開玩笑說侵犯兒童能激起性慾，以及顯現針對特定種族的歧視與侮辱。雖然這是不公開的社團，但招生委員發現此社團後，要求社員學生提供在社團內的貼文及圖片，經過嚴格的查核後，最終將其中部分學生處以拒絕入學的處分。   同年8月，美國一所私立高中發現校內一名應屆畢業生在社群網站上發佈錄取 University of Rochester 羅徹斯特大學的貼文，但學校從未接到需替這名學生寄送申請相關文件給大學的請求，經查證後發現學生是以在家自學的身份申請羅徹斯特大學，羅徹斯特大學也因而發現學生說謊並造假，立即撤銷了這名學生的錄取通知。   雖然在校成績、標準考試成績及課外活動是決定錄取的關鍵條件，但學生在社群媒體上的貼文仍有可能會影響錄取機會，故在此提醒欲至美國留學的學生需留意自己在網路上的言行舉止。   高中在學輔導＆申請大學輔導歡迎洽詢 A. The Importance of STEM Education — Must-Know Facts About Studying Abroad in the U.S.

STEM——Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics STEM Education refers to an integrated approach to learning that combines Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics with the aim of advancing technological development and enhancing competitiveness, which in turn impacts national progress.     Initially, STEM education was primarily implemented in higher education institutions, but the U.S. federal government later emphasized expanding STEM programs into K-12 education. STEM became a standard part of the curriculum for grades 1–12, transforming teaching methods and teacher training to improve student education. Beyond schools, various STEM education companies and technology enterprises have joined forces with the government to popularize STEM, extending its impact beyond the classroom. This initiative is supported comprehensively through scholarships, industrial policies, relevant legislation, funding, and research. Simply put, the U.S. aims to boost economic development and national competitiveness by enhancing workforce quality, which begins with public education. In other words, since "children are the pillars of a nation's future," STEM education must start early.    From a study abroad perspective, a STEM degree is a significant advantage in many U.S. industries. It’s important to note that there isn’t a specific "STEM major" or "STEM degree." Instead, undergraduate or graduate degrees in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics are collectively referred to as STEM degrees. Because STEM emphasizes cross-disciplinary integration, application, and innovation, job opportunities can vary significantly even within the STEM umbrella. For example, Computer Science and Software Engineering were among the most sought-after fields in the U.S. tech industry in 2018, whereas degrees like Mathematics, Physics, and Life Sciences, though also popular, often lead to careers in academic research. In the tech industry, individuals with engineering backgrounds are generally more competitive than those with pure science backgrounds.     Additionally, international students studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa traditionally have one year of Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows them to work in the U.S. after graduation. Students with a STEM degree, however, are eligible for a two-year OPT extension, totaling three years. This demonstrates the U.S. government’s commitment to retaining talent.    In recent years, STEM has increasingly integrated the humanities and social sciences, leading to the emergence of terms like STEAM or STEM+. The U.S. has even established prestigious STEM-focused high schools, and business or management schools have begun creating STEM programs, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary learning and problem-solving in the modern era.      Given that Taiwan's official education system has yet to fully internationalize, students planning to study abroad in the U.S. can strengthen their STEM profiles through extracurricular activities. Here are five ways to get started:  Participate in National and International Competitions There are numerous STEM-related competitions in Taiwan, such as math contests, science fairs, and the Taiwan International Science Fair. To make a stronger impression when applying to U.S. universities, international competitions offer a significant advantage. 留學人數年年增加，美國大學錄取率創新低

2018年申請入學結果發佈，美國頂尖私立大學皆表示今年收到了比往年多的申請文件，而學校要招收的新生人數，有的稍微增加，有的維持不變，有的甚至減少，因此，在申請人數上升的情況下，錄取率只能往下掉，這一屆 Class of 2022 幾乎都是校史上最低的錄取率，也導致錄取學生的平均在校成績和分數都提高了。   舉例而言，Harvard 哈佛大學的總錄取率僅有4.59%，是有史以來首度跌破5%，其中 Early Action 以14.5%的錄取率招收了超過一半的名額，Regular Decision 剩下2.43%的錄取率；MIT 麻省理工學院21,706位學生申請，接受其中1,464位，錄取率只有6.7%；Brown 布朗大學的申請人數比前一年增加8%，35,438人取2,566人，7.2%的錄取率，預計會有1,665位新生入學；所有私立大學裡收到最多申請的 NYU 紐約大學，擁有75,307位申請者，人數比去年上升12%，比十年前上升超過100%，取了15,722位，從五年前35%的錄取率，到去年28%的錄取率，到今年狠狠跌到19%的創新低錄取率，平均錄取SAT為1440分，也是創新高的分數。   另一方面，全美第一的公立大學 UC Berkeley 加州大學柏克萊分校，超過89,000人申請，錄取近13,000人；今年同樣排行公立第一名的 UCLA 洛杉磯分校更是超過113,000人申請，堪稱全美最多，也只能讓不到6,000名的學生註冊；就連 UCSD 聖地牙哥分校都有97,000人申請，而大學一年級的名額只有5,300個；UW 華盛頓大學的申請人數超過45,000人，新生名額大約6,800個，儘管錄取率相對較高，但難度並沒有減低，五年前國際學生不用考SAT也能錄取，反觀今年沒有1400分的SAT都被拒絕。更何況，公立大學本州學生的比例高則75%，低則60%，國際學生只能和美國國內外州生一同競爭那不到40%的名額。   種種數據都顯示，各國留學人數愈來愈多，國際學生最大的來源國包含加拿大、巴西、中國、南韓、印度，光是台灣的留學人數就年年增高，國際學校愈開愈多間，更何況是其他這些人口數量更多的國家。除此之外，平均高中應屆畢業生報名的大學間數增加，也貢獻了各大學所收到的大量申請件數，如今亞洲學生一人平均申請15間大學起跳，美國國內學生為了因應外國學生的競爭，從往年平均一人申請4-6間大學，提高到平均一人申請8-10間大學。   全球化競爭的情形，從早期的進出口與企業發展，到勞動人口的就業機會，再到現在的高中申請大學，年齡層愈趨下降，因此，「接受教育」遠比孩子們想像中來得重要，當他們站得不夠高或者被保護得太好而看不到外面的世界時，身為家長若能預先幫孩子規劃，督促孩子及早為大學做準備，那將會是孩子日後的競爭力。     高中升學＆申請大學輔導歡迎洽詢 A.
